Arriving at Magdalene

Arriving at Magdalene for the first time is an exciting but also a bit daunting prospect - we’re here to make it as smooth as possible!

If you are arriving by plane, it is probably most convenient to take the coach or train (from one of the various airports) to Cambridge.

The coach drop-off location is located at Parker’s Piece, which is located approximately a 20 minute walk from Magdalene. The journey will take you straight through the scenic heart of town: From the corner of Parker’s Piece nearest the Police Station, travel north-west along St. Andrew’s Street, which will become (on the left most fork) Sidney Street, which will become Bridge Street near the Round Church, and finally Magdalene Street. The Main Gate of Magdalene College is on the right, and is the first building you see as you cross the river. Alternatively, you may opt to hail a taxi (local taxi service is Panther Taxi) once you get off the coach. Just tell them to take you to Magdalene College; they’ll probably drop you off (due to access problems) at Prezzo, which is directly across the river from College. Walk across the bridge, past River Court on your right, and the main entrance to the College is on the right hand side of the road.

If you plan to arrive by rail, note that the station is 30 minutes’ walk from Magdalene. Similarly, you may opt for a taxi, or travelling along Station Road, away from the station, you’ll hit the main road: Hills Road. Heading north, you’ll immediately come across the southern most corner of Parker’s Piece. Hills Road will become Regent Street, which will, in turn, become St. Andrew’s Street.

If arriving by car note that as with any place in central Cambridge,
parking and (un)loading a vehicle can be difficult. You may be able to park briefly on the pavement on the northern bank of the River Cam near College.

On arrival you should present yourself at the Porter’s Lodge just inside the main gate, where our Porters will be happy to help you. Accommodation is either in College itself, in a College-owned house, or in accommodation rented for postgraduates by the College. Most accommodation is within a five minute walk from the Porters’ Lodge.
