Gowns are usually required for the Matriculation photo, Formal Hall, Chapel and graduation. Ryder & Amies (01223 350371), A.E. Clothier (01223 354339) and Ede & Ravenscroft (01223 350048), both conveniently located in the city centre (with online stores too), sell new gowns. You can also hire gowns from the Graduate Union. The workers in these shops are knowledgeable about which gown you are entitled to wear. Gowns can also be bought second-hand from Ryder and Amies or from former students. The general rules are:
- If you have a Cambridge degree, wear the gown for that degree, with “tapes” in it. If you do not have a Cambridge degree, and are under 24 wear a Cambridge BA gown, with the tapes removed.
- If you do not have a Cambridge degree, and are over 24 wear a Cambridge MA gown, with the tapes removed. Hoods are only worn for graduation and students never wear caps.
